Led Zeppelin celebrates their classic album Physical Graffiti, revered and deemed a rock classic by music connoisseurs. The rock band formed in London during the 1960s and became one of the most influential bands in rock and roll history. The rock band was way ahead of their time with the use of influences across different genres including folk, psychedelia, soul, reggae, Celtic and even Arabic music. Their album Physical Graffiti went sixteen times platinum because of the raw talent and creative genius of the band. Physical Graffiti is an album that any music lover should listen to once in their lifetime because of how nostalgic and versatile the body of work is.
The album starts off strong with “Custard Pie”, the striking vocals of Robert Plant and the electrifying guitar sounds of Jimmy Page immediately catching your attention. The intricate, but strong percussion played by John Bonham adds power to the beat, keeping the listener’s ears tuned into the song. The listener might also hear the subtle sounds of the clavinet from John Paul Jones. “Custard Pie” sets the stage for the rest of the album, showcasing a taste of what is to come. If you enjoyed the first song, the rest of the album will surely be euphoric and teleport you to a different, more nostalgic time.
“In My Time of Dying” is a longer song at around eleven minutes, but arguably worth every second because of how dynamic it is. The song starts off with the strums of an electric guitar and the introduction of Robert Plant’s distinctive vocals. The punchy drums follow shortly after, reeling the listener in for the musical journey of their life. The beat switches up later in the song, the drums and guitar meshing for a thrilling listening experience. By the time the song’s finished, you won’t even notice it has been eleven minutes, only that you listened to one of the most uniquely crafted Rock songs.
“Bron-Yr-Aur” is a beautiful instrumental featuring an acoustic guitar that captures the essence of life with all its ups and downs. The song name means “hill of gold” and was said to be a cabin located on the outskirts of Wales. The cabin was a significant time for Led Zeppelin because it allowed them time off and the song “Bron-Yr-Aur” resulted from the excursion. The song represents a small escape the band had from their life and a source for later inspiration in their music. However, the beauty of the song is that it means something different for all those who listen to it.
“Down by the Seaside” is a laid-back ballad that takes a break from the heavy rock vibe in the album. The song features a blend of other musical genres such as blues and folk, with occasional traces of their rock influences during interludes. The slow percussion and beautiful melodies instill a nostalgic, calm vibe within listeners that makes the song enchanting to listen to. The song is the perfect song to listen to at the beach on a summer night or swaying side to side with someone you love.
“Boogie with Stu” is a gem within the album, using ragtime piano chord and vocal melodies that capture the creative essence of the band. The song is wholesome and immediately makes you want to get up to dance along. “Boogie with Stu” is such a catchy song that it’ll make you want to listen to it repeatedly until you can’t listen anymore. The song was truly ahead of its time with longtime and new fans listening to or discovering their favorite song.
The album ends with “Sick Again,” but the influence of the album remains ingrained into rock music today. The creative talent of Led Zeppelin did not begin with Physical Graffiti but rather it was a cultivation of years of developing their musical craft. Led Zeppelin was a group ahead of their time and Physical Graffiti is a testament to their creative genius. It will forever be a one-of-kind album that you will listen to once and remain forever changed. Regardless of your musical taste, Physical Graffiti should be next on your playlist because it was a masterfully created body of work. Led Zeppelin left a legacy so profound that it will transcend into generations to come.
